- Auditorium:
Net-Print
- Cornell's Solution to Student Printing:
Rick
Cochran
Implementing a charge-back printing system requires that several factors
come into alignment: authentication, authorization, client and server
software, page counting, accounting, billing, reporting, printer configuration
maintenance, Web interface, documentation, and politics, not to mention
the necessity of a compelling justification. I will try to give a brief
overview of Net-Print's approach to each of these, along with a description
of the challenges we are currently facing.

Tracking computer lab usage to make better IT support and budgeting decisions
Computer Lab Solutions will be presenting a case study of how a university
found and implemented an affordable solution for keeping track of usage
in their 25+ computer labs around campus. They wanted to know which computer
labs students were using the most, and align their limited IT budgets
with students' needs. They also wanted to view in real time the status
of each computer lab so students could easily find labs with open seats.
Come and learn how LabStats met their needs and how easy it is to implement
LabStats at your school.

Keeping Everyone Happy:
Serving Windows Users in a Macintosh Environment: Laurie
Sutch
Dedicated solely to serving the faculty population at the University of
Michigan, the Faculty Exploratory has been supporting novice and non-users
of technology since 1997. To help demystify the technology, providing
software that was familiar to what faculty members had in their offices
was imperative, and so users have an option of either Macintosh or Windows-based
applications at the same workstation. A core philosophical component of
the Exploratory since the beginning, the technology supporting this platform
choice has changed over time, and each change has led to more streamlined
maintenance of both hardware and software. In addition, new possibilities
of service delivery have arisen. For example, with the new Terminal Services
system, we can now provide access to certain software from remote locations,
including training facilities, while still remaining within our licensing
agreement. In this session, we will discuss the pros and cons of the various
technical solutions we have used over the years and the future directions
of this training center as well.

Universal Imaging Utility for Windows and
Symantec Ghost 8.2 & Solution Suite 1.0
The most common question we have received in four years of Symantec Ghost
training and consulting is, “How do I create a Windows image that
works on multiple hardware platforms?” Unfortunately, the answer
has always involved a massive amount of work to select hardware drivers,
Plug-and-Play ID, etc. That has all changed. Big Bang now has a simple
software solution – our Universal Imaging Utility. In less than
five minutes you can setup a Windows 2000 or Windows XP image that will
work on all your hardware platforms, desktops and laptops alike. We have
recently released the Universal Imaging Utility 2.0 version, which allows
support for different HALs and also provides SCSI support in Windows XP.
Combine a Universal Image with the full capabilities of Symantec Ghost
8.2 and the Solution Suite 1.0, and the potential for time savings and
consistency is tremendous. Join us to see how the UIU works, and get involved
in an interactive demonstration of Ghost’s ability to deploy images,
reset network configuration settings, and deploy software applications.
We regularly work with educational organizations and understand the challenges
they face with regards to hardware, software, and network configurations,
so this demonstration will be tailored specifically to lab environments.

Bread, Velcro & Remote Access Computer Labs!: Colleen
Andrews
Resident and off-campus students can access the same software from where
they live that they have only been able to use in on-campus computer labs.
Save budget on equipment, computer lab space and lab staff while making
computer lab services available 24-hours a day from anywhere. Students
are no longer tethered to a computer lab desk, but with a personal computer
or a wireless laptop, can do their homework in their dorm room, in their
apartment, in the library or in the student center like they used to have
to do in campus computer labs. Discussion will cover remote access strategies,
bandwidth issues, network file storage, printing, etc. The best thing
since sliced bread & velcro - remote access computer labs!
